NY Delta 5K Run a Success
The
New York Delta Chapter has deemed its first 5K Run for the Jerry Luker
Fund a success.
Raising
over $1,000, the 5K Run included both runners from and outside of the
Rensselaer community. Prize money was awarded to the first three runners
with the shortest time. First place winner Kenneth Plowman, finishing
in 16 minutes, 1 second, donated half of his prize money to the Jerry
Luker Fund, a non-profit fund whose monies are awarded annually by the
New York Delta Chapter to cancer research organizations. The fund is named
after Jerry Luker '95, who fell victim to cancer in 1996.
"To
host such an event shows the best side of Sigma Phi Epsilon, a public
minded fraternity that takes the time to recognize the importance of finding
a cure for this dreaded illness which takes the lives of so many young
people," stated Mr. Walter Class, Jerry Luker's father, in a letter.
"I
am very impressed with the men's efforts...This has incredible potential,"
commented Norris Pearson, Rensselaer Dean of Students.
Donations
for the charity run are still coming in. The beneficiaries of the charity
run will be determined later after a the total amount raised has been
determined.
